A person’s teeth become discolored and yellowed for many reasons. Primarily from eating and drinking foods and beverages which can stain teeth. Namely berries, coffee, and tea. Smoking or using tobacco can also cause teeth to yellow. Whitening treatments can usually address these stains. This is the most commonly used whitening treatment. It begins having the patient assessed for tooth damage or decay by the dentist. Any areas of decay found will be cleaned and treated prior to the whitening. When the whitening begins, an effective, light activated gel made with hydrogen peroxide will coat each tooth’s surface. To ensure that each tooth is covered with the same amount of gel and exposed to the same amount of light, the patient’s lips will be held back with a retainer. The gel is applied and the light directed on it for approximately 15 minutes. After the allotted time, the gel will be removed along with the lip retainer. Patients will see whiter, brighter teeth immediately.
