Root Canal Q & A

What is an Endodontist?

Dentists who have undergone special training to address concerns with interior and roots of teeth are called endodontists. Root canals, root canal retreatment, apicoectomies, implant placements and restorations, treatment of chipped and broken teeth, and dental emergencies are all treatments which an endodontist can offer. Endodontics will correct any issues which affect the integrity of the tooth, the tooth’s strength, and the structure. Most endodontic procedures will require a trained professional because they are quite complex.

When Would I go to This Dentist?

Several concerns with the gums and teeth will fall under the purview of an endodontist including addressing a tooth ache, replacing a missing tooth, treating a chipped or broken tooth, and treatment of tender or swollen gums. The primary reason why patients go to the dentist is to undergo a root canal.

What are Root Canals?

A root canal in a dental procedure which is performed to address the concerns of an abscessed or infected tooth. A root canal can save a decayed tooth from being extracted. Underneath the outer layer, inside of a tooth, is a section known as the pulp. This pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues which are responsible for growing the tooth’s root during development. A root canal is employed to treat a tooth where the pulp has become irritated or inflamed, usually due to infection. Infections usually develop because of faulty crowns, chips, decay, and repeated dental procedures. When the infection is not addressed it can cause an abscess. The procedure will begin with cleaning inside of the tooth and removing any damaged tissue. The interior is then filled with a rubber-like substance and restored with a crown or filling. Saving the tooth can be beneficial for many people because it can assist with maintaining natural chewing and sensations as well as preserving the natural look of the tooth.
