Invisalign® Q & A

What are Invisalign® Aligners?

The Invisalign® system is an orthodontic tool which is used by a dentist to gradually correct a person’s misaligned or overcrowded teeth. The Invisalign® system is not like the traditional braces normally used, because the aligners are made from clear, BPA-free plastic and are nearly invisible when worn. The Invisalign® aligners are designed specifically for a patient’s teeth and mouth using 3D impressions and x-rays. Patients can straighten their teeth without the look of metal braces with this option.

How do the Aligners Work?

While patients' needs will differ, the dentist typically starts the process by creating a treatment plan and requesting a set of aligners. Throughout the entire process, the aligners will be worn and should only be removed to change out the set, when brushing and flossing teeth, or when eating certain food. The aligners are made from medical plastic because it is comfortable and doesn’t irritate the cheeks and gums like metal braces can. Teeth will gradually move into their designated space. Typically, the aligners will be changed out every two weeks and must be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day. The aligners will be worn for about a year however it depends on how severe the alignment issue is.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign® Aligners?

While traditional, metal braces must be worn all the time during the treatment, Invisalign® aligners can be removed depending on the patient's need, such as to eat or brush teeth. Invisalign® aligners are also clear which makes them ideal for someone who doesn't want others to see what is on their teeth. Since the aligners can be removed, it also makes it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene habits during the entire treatment time which is much more difficult when there are brackets and wires to brush around.
